Giving Up Your Pet
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter wants to save as many lives as possible. We believe the best place for a companion animal is in their home. We understand, however, that there are times when the human/animal bond breaks or circumstances change and a guardian must relinquish a pet.
If you are thinking about relinquishing your animal, please consider the following: A health examination, behavior assessment, and/or history review will determine if your pet is suited for our adoption program. To offset the cost of this evaluation, a fee is requested when you relinquish your pet.

$50 per animal for pets residing in our service area.
We ask that those people who find a stray and bring them to our facility help to offset the costs of placing the animal. We currently ask for $25 for stray animals. As a private, nonprofit agency, we rely on community support to care for Santa Fe’s lost, abandoned and unwanted pets. We are not affiliated with any national humane organization and receive no state or federal funding. Contributions and fees make up 90 percent of our annual operating budget and those funds make it possible for us to continue providing critically needed services to the animals of our community.
Other options: Santa Fe city and county animal services divisions contract with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and will intake lost or stray animals at no cost. For more information on these taxpayer-supported services, please call city animal services at 955-2701 or county animal services at 992-1626.
What if I need to return my pet?
Our adoptions are satisfaction guaranteed. If you adopt an animal from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and discover that you are not compatible due to behavior concerns or medical issues or changes in your circumstances, you may return the companion animal at any time. We may request a relinquishment fee if the animal is returned more than 30 days after adoption.
