Executive Team

  • Caren Shiozaki

    Interim CEO

    Caren is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area. She’s worked in corporate executive roles that have taken her to Hong Kong, Phoenix and Dallas before landing in Santa Fe in 2008. She’s supported animal welfare organizations in all of those places, and others, along the way. From childhood, Caren has always had rescue dogs; her current fur baby is SFAS alum, Willoughby. Caren has served on a number of boards, both for and not for profit. She is a long time volunteer, donor and Board Chair Emeritus of SFAS. The Board is pleased that she was able to step in quickly to help them bridge the gap to finding a permanent CEO.

  • Linda Moore

    Director of Finance

    Born and raised in Sweden, Linda came to New Mexico in 2001. Sweden to New Mexico – how did that happen? Well, before moving to New Mexico she worked on a luxury cruise ship as a stewardess and got a snapshot of the world in addition to making new friends. New relationships brought her to Jackson Hole, WY for a summer job on a dude ranch before coming to New Mexico. After a few years of working for a public accounting firm she decided to attend the University of New Mexico where she earned her Bachelor Degree of Business Administration. After finishing college Linda earned her Certified Public Accountant license and returned to public accounting as an auditor for a couple of years. Before joining the Shelter, Linda also worked as controller for a local community bank in Santa Fe. Linda is happy to now be part of the Shelter team and such a great mission. When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her fiancée, Dave who in addition to being a massage therapist is also a great cook. Another friendly companion is the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Alumni Paco, the Maine Coon cat who acts like a dog. She also enjoys spending time in the garden, hiking, and skiing and capturing those times on her camera.

  • Monica Gonzalez

    Director of ARC, CASA, Licensing and Compassion Services

    Shortly after completing a degree in Criminal Justice, Monica realized she preferred to work with animals. She now manages the Admissions department and licensing programs. Monica and her team work endlessly to reunite lost pets with their owners. She says experiencing that moment when a family is reunited with their lost pet keeps her coming to work every day. Monica enjoys a good boxing match, football, and cooking.

  • Dylan Moore

    Senior Director of Shelter Operations

    Born in Missouri, Dylan has lived throughout the East Coast. With a degree in psychology, he spent 14 years doing social work. As Director of Shelter Operations, Dylan provides oversight to the departments involved in the internal care and flow of the shelter animals, including Admissions, Behavior & Training, Animal Care, Adoptions, Volunteers, and New Hope. His favorite time of year is hockey season, and when he’s not at the shelter, he’s hanging with his adorable young son. Dylan has been with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter for over ten years.

  • Kim Kelly

    Director of Human Resources

    After graduating from Texas A&M University, Kim lived in Seattle, WA, for 15 years before returning to the warm, sunny southwest. Over her successful career in Human Resources, Kim has worked in manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, and at domestic violence organizations. She enjoys helping and serving people and has a passion for the welfare of animals. Kim especially has a soft spot for Doberman Pinschers. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her Doberkid, Legend, and continues to pursue her passion of service to others by volunteering at several nonprofit organizations.

  • Krista Lewis

    Director of Philanthropy

    Krista spent most of her life in our neighboring state of Colorado, yet her love for New Mexico has steadily grown since her first family trip here as a young girl. As an adult, she would look forward to her annual escapes to Taos and Santa Fe from Denver, and eventually found it more and more difficult to leave this Land of Enchantment. So, she officially made the move to Santa Fe with her cats, Walter and Petunia, in May of 2023 and could not feel more at home here. She is grateful to have the opportunity to support her new community as Director of Philanthropy for Santa Fe Animal Shelter. Krista has had the privilege of raising funds and awareness for many wonderful nonprofits over the last 25+ years, including an animal shelter in Golden, Colorado. She places high priority on making a positive impact through her work and has a passion for establishing new partnerships and discovering innovative and creative ways to collaborate across agencies and fields. Krista is also passionate about mental health. She was a certified instructor in Mental Health First Aid and trained hundreds of community members in this national program from 2017 to 2023. She earned a BFA in Theatre at the University of Colorado in Boulder and remains a proud supporter of arts and culture in our community. Krista also enjoys traveling near and far and spending much of her time in nature—walking, hiking, and meditating.

  • Michelle Aceves

    CVPM, Director of Veterinary Operations

    Michelle was born and raised in New Mexico, and she has always had a passion for the human-animal bond. She majored in Animal Science at NMSU, originally a pre-vet student. She then pursued business and human resources. She received her CVPM certification through the Veterinary Hospital Manager Association. Michelle brings with her over 16 years of experience in the Veterinary Industry. As Hospital Director, Michelle provides oversight to the shelter’s clinic and hospital departments. She has a menagerie of animals at home, including dogs, cats, horses, an African grey parrot, and two pot-bellied pigs. When not at work, she enjoys riding her horses and spending time with her husband and daughters.

  • Dr. Deb Diaz

    Medical Director

    Dr. Deb Diaz is originally from the South and graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. In her over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian, she has worked in various different roles including being an equine, small animal general practice and small animal emergency veterinarian. She has also had multiple Medical Director roles in general and emergency practices. Dr. Diaz has lived and worked in Mississippi, Florida and Texas. She has called Santa Fe home since 2018.

    Dr. Diaz completed her Inner MBA certificate from NYU in 2021. The Inner MBA is a year long program designed to teach leaders how to better practice conscious, mindful and inclusive business.

    Dr. Diaz loves the mission of our shelter and serving the Santa Fe community!

    Dr. Diaz has two daughters and they share their home with Velma the cat, Lola Louise the chihuahua and Chimichanga the cowboy corgi.

  • Dr. Michelle Salob

    Shelter Clinic Veterinarian

    Dr. Salob, a graduate of Tufts Veterinary School, has devoted her veterinary career to the practice of shelter medicine. She loves being an advocate for the animals who need it most and serving the community of Santa Fe.

  • Dr. Kellie Levin

    Thaw Animal Hospital Veterinarian

    Dr. Levin received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University where she majored in Animal Science. She went on to receive her DVM from Ross University. Immediately after graduating from Ross, she spent almost a year in London, England studying for her Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and working in a small animal practice. Prior to working at Thaw Animal Hospital, Dr. Levin worked in the towns of Greenwich, Bridgeport and Norwalk, CT. In addition to treating cats and dogs, her interests include treating pocket pets, especially ferrets and rats. She even performed surgery on her own goldfish! When not working, Dr. Levin spends time with her rescue dogs Frances, a German Shorthaired Pointer and Weezie, a Pit Bull.

  • Dr. Jillian Dougherty

    Thaw Animal Hospital Veterinarian

    Dr. Dougherty joined our team in May 2021 after almost 13 years in private practice and several years in Emergency Medicine, with both a small animal and equine emphasis. Jillian is from Lafayette, LA but spent many years in Texas, Mississippi, and Montana before finding her forever home in Glorieta, NM. She received her Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M in Animal Science, a Master of Science in Equine Nutrition, and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University. Her outside interests include gardening, cooking, karate, painting, trail running, hiking, horseback riding, and skiing. Jillian and her husband Tab share their home with their Malamute (Adele), cats (Zen and The Dude), and horses (Doc and Sherpa).

  • Dr. Dylan Conradson

    Thaw Animal Hospital Veterinarian

    Dr. Conradson is native New Mexican who returned home after his recent graduation from the DVM program at Washington State University. While studying at the University of New Mexico he did extensive research on native species of small mammals including kangaroo rats, grasshopper mice, and wood rats. He’s also studied passerine songbirds at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and Elk Hoof Disease while in Washington State. He sees birds and small mammals in addition to dogs and cats. Dr. Conradson keeps two parrots, Rasbirdy the African Grey and Clover the Red Lored Amazon. You can catch him playing folk music at local open mics or find him skiing the backcountry during winter.

  • Tom Alexander

    Humane Education Coordinator

    Hailing from Texas, Tom graduated from Texas A&M and spent his business career in Philadelphia, PA. In 2000, he retired to gorgeous Santa Fe. As the Humane Education Coordinator for the shelter, Tom works hard to educate young people in our community. He knows that if spay/neuter efforts are going to grow, and if animal abuse and neglect is going to be reduced, it has to begin in the hearts and minds of New Mexico’s young people.

Board of Directors

  • Sheila Vaughn

    Board Chair

    Sheila is a native of Illinois, but spent most of her adult life in Southern California. After receiving her Ph.D. in psychology, she had a private practice and taught at UC Irvine for 20 years. Since moving to Santa Fe 10 years ago, Sheila has continued her private practice and does consultation with couples in the collaborative divorce process. In her free time, when not being trained by her flat-coated retriever, she does volunteer work, reads, hikes and looks forward to post-pandemic movie-going and traveling.

  • Diana Brown

    Vice Chair

    Diana grew up in Minneapolis, lived primarily in Los Angeles, and retired full time to Santa Fe with her husband and three rescue dogs in 2020 after having lived here part-time for almost 15 years.

    Diana received a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University and a JD from the University of Michigan. Prior to her retirement, Diana practiced health care law in San Diego and Los Angeles.

    Diana enjoys hiking, traveling throughout the Southwest and learning to play tennis.

  • Elizabeth Rice

    Secretary & Treasurer

    Elizabeth has lived in Santa Fe since 1977 and has served on many boards including Girls' Inc, Santa Fe Community Foundation, and Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary. Her background in nonprofit experience as well as strategic planning, policy development and finance will benefit our board going forward. Elizabeth has a big dog named Bear.

  • Bill Feinberg

    Board Member

    William "Bill" Feinberg is the President of Dorsar Investment Partners and related entities, a diversified investment holding company primarily focusing on various types of private capital / equity, real estate, and other alternative asset classes. Bill is responsible for all aspects of running Dorsar including sourcing and performing due diligence on new investments, financial and analysis and reporting, shareholder relations, estate planning, accounting, and tax / audit. Bill joined Dorsar in 2008. Prior to Dorsar, Bill held various positions at Washington Mutual Bank in Seattle, WA, Staenberg Venture Partners, for Microsoft Corp and for Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.

    In addition to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, Bill currently serves on the boards of the Nature Conservancy of New Mexico (as chair), and Communities in Schools of New Mexico. He is also a member of the finance and endowment committees at Rio Grande School.

    Bill has a B.A. in political science and minor in Spanish from Skidmore College and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University focusing on finance and strategy. Bill resides in Santa Fe, NM with his wife Ariana, their 2 sons Noah (14) and Max (11) and their dog Willy Bear.

  • Kris Michaelis

    Board Member

    Kris and her husband, Kenny Goldstein, moved to Santa Fe from Walnut Creek, CA in 2002 and have loved the NM culture, outdoor activities, community engagement and philantropic activities ever since.

    A retired human resource and organization development consultant, she has worked as a volunteer and/or board member for Challenge New Mexico, Assistance Dogs of the West, Girls Inc. of Santa Fe, Alliance for Gun Violence Solutions and the Santa Fe Branch of the NAACP. She has effectively lobbied the NM legislature in the areas of social, health and housing equity, sexual harassment investigations by independent parties and now for minimizing gun violence through reasonable gun access laws. In her spare time she often volunteers for ADW, socializing dogs in training to become service dogs, hiking (often with them) and working on her art.

    Love of animals, especially dogs, has been a part of her life since she was five when her family owned an English Springer Spaniel known for killing water moccasins (of all things!) at her family's farm in south central Alabama. She and Kenny had a Santa Fe Animal Shelter adoptee, Sidney, a black Lab rescued near Edgewood, for 12 years.

  • Gretchen Walther

    Board Member

    Gretchen began to visit Santa Fe as a young girl when her father moved here and opened his law practice in 1983. Santa Fe captured her heart and she spent her childhood exploring Santa Fe's historic architecture, native American culture and art, and the forests of the Sangre de Christos.

    Gretchen was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After 2 years of college abroad in Switzerland, Gretchen finished her undergraduate education at New York University. Gretchen remained in New York for law school and obtained her Juris Doctorate in 1997. After graduating from law school, Gretchen followed her heart to New Mexico and began her legal career. Gretchen combined forces with her father David Walther and for many years they ran a pre-eminent divorce and family law firm with offices in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

    25 years later Gretchen decided to close the doors of her law practice and pursue a career in real estate with her partner Mary Guzman. The Guzman & Walther Real Estate Group work with Sotheby's International Realty of Santa Fe and their favorite team members are their Golden Retriever "Bruno Mars", their Boston Terrier "Gus" and their kitty "Hucklberry Finn". Gretchen brings the passions she developed in her legal career to being a real estate broker - developing personal connections with people, negotiating win-win deals, creative problem solving and helping people meet their goals and dreams.
