Medical Director
The Medical Director oversees the entire medical program for sheltered animals. Acts as liaison between the shelter clinic, other SFAS departments, and the public. Is responsible for the medical health and well-being of sheltered animals. The incumbent creates and implements protocols for shelter medicine and the flow of animals through SFAS. The Medical Director is the license holder for the shelter clinic. The incumbent also performs as a Shelter Clinic Veterinarian. Veterinarian Assistant or Technician
Santa Fe Animal Shelter Clinic - Assist the veterinarians in the medical and surgical treatment of animals. Intake animals entering the shelter system following proper protocols of fear free animal handling and computer data entry. Assist the veterinarians in the aspects of intake, laboratory diagnostics, radiographs, animal restraint, vaccinations, deworming, parasite treatments, and monitoring patient weights. Keep clinic and kennels clean, administer proper medications, and feed and exercise animals as directed. Clinic Veterinarian
The Shelter Clinic Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including spay/neuter procedures, treatment of a wide range of medical conditions, and herd health maintenance. Implements shelter medical protocols as established by the Medical Director, and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals seen in the Shelter Clinic. Thaw Hospital - Veterinary Assistant/Technician
Clare Eddy Thaw Animal Hospital located on the Santa Fe Animal Shelter campus is accepting resumes for experienced full and part time Veterinary Assistant/Technicians. We are seeking team members that have veterinary hospital and animal handling experience. Must be willing to learn and work as a progressive team. We are seeking candidates that are self-motivated, who will administer vaccinations and medication, draw blood, assist the doctors with running diagnostics, assist in surgery, IV catheter placement etc. Must love working with the public, have compassion for animals in need, and possess a strong work ethic. Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and must be available to work weekends. Bilingual (Spanish) speakers are a plus. Full-time benefits include: Health insurance, Hospital discount, Vacation time. Compensation commensurate with experience. RVT and CVT preferred, but not required. If you’re passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals, you can do just that on the Santa Fe Animal Shelter behavior team. We keep sheltered animals happy and comfortable until they find their new home. This can mean socializing them to people, making sure they have enrichment throughout their stay with us, and managing their behavior through training or modifying their environment. This position requires strong observation skills and a readiness to think creatively - the essential skill of this job is correctly interpreting an animal’s emotional state and then problem solving to provide them the things they need to be successful while in the shelter. Well qualified candidates are willing to share ideas and work collaboratively with the team. Good communication skills and comfort handling dogs of all sizes and energy levels are key. Experience in animal handling and training is a plus.This position requires a willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather, and being in good physical condition with the ability to bend over, crouch, lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
While the majority of the work is with dogs, you may be asked to work with a variety of other species including cats.
Responsibilities include providing for the mental wellbeing of our sheltered animals through enrichment including daily walks, food puzzles, behavior modification and training work, assessing animals for safety, effectively and objectively communicating with staff, volunteers, and the public, and otherwise maintaining a positive shelter environment.
