Scrappy came to us as a stray with a broken tail and shattered spirit.
His injuries were so severe they affected his ability to function normally. Left untreated, they could have become life-threatening. The fractures were located at the very base of his tail, up against his back, requiring a complete tail amputation—an incredibly complicated and risky surgery.
After thoughtful consideration, we decided to take that risk, so Scrappy would have a chance at a better life. Thanks to the skill and dedication of our veterinary team—and the generosity of donors like you—we gave Scrappy that chance.

Although it was challenging, the surgery was a success! In the weeks that followed, Scrappy received around-the-clock care and pain management. He had to learn to navigate a new world without a tail. And he did—bravely, sweetly, with trust. While he couldn’t express his gratitude by wagging his tail, like other dogs do, he told us with his eyes and an abundance of kisses. He is indeed a special dog, ready for that special person to give him a loving home.

So, what does it take to save a life?
It takes being a little scrappy! It takes dedicated medical experts with the determination and willingness to take a risk, against all odds. It takes X-rays and medical equipment. Gloves and gauze. Pain meds and peanut butter. Steady hands. Gentle hearts. Patience. Compassion.

Your compassion is the reason animals like Scrappy get a second chance. Every time you give, you become part of the story—funding the safe shelter, nourishing food, daily enrichment, and lifesaving medical care that each animal needs to heal and thrive.
On average, that care costs about $1,800 per animal. This month, we’ve set an ambitious goal: to raise $175,000 to carry this work forward for the hundreds of animals who will need us this summer. We simply can’t do it without you.
